Head of English

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring and motivated Head of English. The successful candidate will teach the department’s curriculum across the age range and be someone who will share the school’s passion for encouraging all pupils to work towards their maximum potential.

In common with all Forest School departments, the English Department is well-resourced and teachers are accommodated in classrooms equipped with electronic whiteboards and audio visual equipment. There are 11 teaching colleagues in the English Department, many of whom hold wider positions of responsibility throughout the school. We teach Edexcel English and English Literature IGCSE and Edexcel A level English Literature.

The department aims to promote the engagement and enjoyment of English beyond the classroom, and to this end we use London as a rich and vibrant resource. Across all years, pupils are given the opportunity to go on theatre trips. There is a thriving English Society (for Y12 and Y13), and wider reading initiatives (for all years). Debating and creative writing societies are also run by members of the English Department, and the Department has run recent poetry competitions and initiatives such as The Masked Reader to raise the profile of the subject within the school.

Introduction to Forest School

Surrounded by ancient forest and only thirty minutes from central London, Forest School is an outstanding independent day school located on the edge of Epping Forest. Forest is a large, diverse, and vibrant school, with approximately 1,500 pupils from 4 to 18. Our traditional House structure means that each pupil is treated as an individual, of whom we have the highest expectations, while our size enables us to offer breadth and depth of opportunity. Foresters are ‘known, liked and valued’ and this is central to our educational philosophy.
