Name: Sophie

A Level subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Music

University course: Production Arts

First choice destination: Bristol Old Vic Theatre School

What was the thought process that led you to choose to study Production Arts?

I am studying an unusual mix of A levels and I love studying Music, but I am drawn to the academic side of the subject more than performing and composing so I didn’t really consider following that path. Biology is my favourite subject and I originally thought that I would study Biology and Genetics until Y12 when the experience of working on the Tech Team for Barnum made me realise that was the world I wanted to be a part of.

I have been involved in drama behind the scenes since House Drama in Y7 but it was through Barnum that I had the experience of working with professional theatre technicians which I really enjoyed – especially the opportunity to try programme the lighting specialist’s designs. That experience helped me decide that what I wanted to explore was the creative side of working behind the scenes.

Where else did you apply?

My first choice is probably going to be Bristol because that course takes a holistic approach to all aspects of theatre and film production before offering the opportunity to specialise in your third year. I am also holding offers from Guildford School of Acting which is part of the University of Surrey and Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

What are your plans for the future?

I have been teaching myself film editing during lockdown but I think I would like to work in theatre lighting our sound design.
