What was the thought process that led you to choose to read Geography at University?

Chemistry was the subject I initially thought I would study but I decided that I didn’t want to be in a lab the whole time and I have been really enjoying Geography, so I decided to pursue that. I like the fact that it is quite a broad subject that can take you in several different directions. I’m passionate about physical Geography in particular and I hope to make the most of the opportunities to do fieldwork and possibly study abroad.

Where else did you apply?

I have offers from Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Bristol and Leeds in this country and I have also applied to New York University, Tufts, and the College of William & Mary in Virginia. The University admissions process is very different in the US and the personal statements are a lot more ‘personal’ and ask you to explain why you would be a good fit for the institution you are applying for.

I am also drawn to the fact that the education system in the US is much broader, so as part of my studies in the US I would study English, Maths, Science and Psychology alongside my Geography major and I really like the idea of not having to specialise as early as students in the UK.

What are your plans for the future?

I really have no idea what I am going to do in the future but that is another reason why I think the broad approach taken by US Universities makes sense for me as it gives me the freedom to keep my options open.
